What are Fetchable Lands in MTG?
A fetchable land is a land that contains a basic land subtype. All basic lands have a basic land subtype. A basic Island, for instance, has a subtype of ‘Island’. The same is true for Plains, Swamps, Mountains and Forests. But there are other lands that also have basic land subtypes. This means that those lands can be secured when a spell or ability says you can search your library for a <basic-land-type> card.
For example, Knight of the White Orchid says that you can search your library for a Plains card and put it on the battlefield, if an opponent controls more lands that you do. That means you can find any card that has the subtype of Plains, not just a basic Plains. It can be a dual land, or even a tri color land! So long as the card you are searching for has the basic land subtype!
Why Do I Need Fetchable Lands?
If you are playing with a deck that is more than one color, it is important to have access to each color so you can cast your spells. Having ways to get lands that can give you specific colors is crucial. This is especially true when decks have more and more colors in them. Having adequate ramps spells in green decks and/or including fetch lands in your decks will greatly help you. By having a nice assortment of fetchable lands in your deck that are not basics, you will ensure you have your colors when you need them. If you’re curious, here is a great resource that describes all the benefits True Fetch Lands offer you.
All MTG Fetchable Lands
What good is a fetch land without fetchable lands? Aside from the fetch lands that can only find and fetch a basic land, which is the majority, the other fetch lands can grab anything, so long as the land has the required type. Here list of all fetchable lands since they have the land types.

Fetchable Tri Lands
Here are all the fetchable tri lands MTG has printed. Currently, there are only 11 fetchable tri lands, 10 of which are part of the triome/tricycle cycle of cards. The last one is an oddity that stands alone.
Triomes/Tricycles Fetchable Lands
The full cycle of Triome/Tricycle lands from Ikoria and New Capenna are the only tri color fetchable lands, aside from a random forest land we will discuss afterwards. Each of these lands have the following text and abilities:
- Enters the battlefield tapped
- Tap to add 1 color of its 3 type’s colors
- Pay 3 generic to Cycle

Zagoth Triome | Swamp Mountain Forest |
Murmuring Bosk
This is an interesting fetchable land. While it is just a Forest type card, Murmuring Bosk is technically a tri land itself, since it can tap for 3 different colors. It is rather unfortunate that this isn’t a complete cycle for each of the 10 different 3 color combinations. I’d even settle for a half cycle where each color type gets its own version, like a Plains version for instance. Murmuring Bosk has the following text and abilities and basically an automatic inclusion to any Green, White and Black decks out there:
- As it enters the battlefield, you may reveal a Treefolk card from your hand – if you don’t, it enters tapped
- Tap to add 1 green
- Tap to add 1 white or 1 black – it deals you 1 damage
Fetchable Dual Lands
Here are all the fetchable dual lands MTG has to offer in specific cycles. While these are not officially ranked or anything like that, I have ordered them from strongest to weakest, in my opinion, of course.
True Dual Fetchable Lands
These are the best fetchable lands in MTG. The true dual lands are a complete set of 10 that enter the battlefield untapped and tap for either one of its colors. These 10 cards are on the reserved list, however, and are extremely expensive.

Shock Fetchable Dual Lands
Shocklands are arguably the second best cycle of MTG fetchable lands since they have the ability to enter the battlefield untapped, at the cost of paying 2 life. This full 10 card cycle is by no means cheap, but compared to true dual lands, they are considerably more affordable. Each shock land has the following rules and text:
- Enters the battlefield tapped unless you pay 2 life
- Tap to add 1 color of its 2 type’s colors

Bicycle Fetchable Dual Lands
This half cycle of Bicycle fetchable lands MTG has printed are very similar to the Triome/Tricycle lands mentioned above except they are only dual lands, and the cycling ability costs 2 generic instead of 3 generic. Each of these 5 cards has the following text and abilities:
- Enters the battlefield tapped
- Tap to add 1 color of its 2 type’s colors

Fetchable Dual Lands: Surveil Lands
The Murders at Karlov Manor set gave us a full cycle of fetchable lands; the Surveil lands. This cycle of lands is very similar to the Scry lands from Theroes Beyond Death except rather than scrying, you will surveil. If you’re not familiar with that term, it just means look at the top card of your library. You may leave it there or place it into your grave yard.

Another half full cycle of fetchable lands are the Tango lands. These lands enter the battlefield tapped unless you control two or more basic lands. All of these lands have been included in precons as of late and as a result, are very cheap pickups! These 5 lands have the following rules and text:

Fetchable Lands of a Single Type
Here are all the single type fetchable lands MTG has printed. These consist of a common cycle from Throne of Eldraine, and uncommon cycle from Shadowmoor and a single little oddball at the end!
Throne of Eldraine Common Lands
This cycle of common fetchable lands from Throne of Eldraine all have the potential to enter the battlefield untapped, provided you control three other basics of the land subtype in question. Each one also has a unique ability that triggers if the untap condition is met. Each card has the following text:
- Enters tapped unless you control three or more other _____ (whatever its basic land subtype is)
- Unique untapped ability
Card Name | Basic Land Subtype | Untapped Ability |
---|---|---|
Idyllic Grange | Plains | If it enters untapped, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control |
Mystic Sanctuary | Island | If it enters untapped, put target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard on top of your library |
Witch’s Cottage | Swamp | If it enters untapped, put target creature card from your graveyard on top of your library |
Dwarven Mine | Mountain | If it enters untapped, create a 1/1 red Dwarf creature token |
Gingerbread Cabin | Forest | If it enters untapped, create a Food artifact token |
Shadowmoor Uncommon Lands
The cycle of uncommon lands from Shadowmoor are fetchable lands since they have basic land types. They all function the same in that each one enters tapped, can tap for its color and has an ability that cost 1 of its color to activate, with varying affects. Each Shadowmoor uncommon fetchable land has the following text and abilities:
- Enters tapped
- Tap to add 1 color of its type
- Unique ability
- Tap and pay 1 color of its type to do the ability
- Can only activate if you control two or ____ permanents (the color of its basic land subtype)
Card Name | Basic Land Subtype | Unique Ability |
---|---|---|
Mistveil Plains | Plains | Put target card from your graveyard on the bottom of your library |
Moonring Island | Island | Look at the top card of target player’s library |
Leechridden Swamp | Swamp | Each opponent loses 1 life |
Madblind Mountain | Mountain | Shuffle your library |
Sapseep Forest | Forest | You gain 1 life |
Dryad Arbor
Dryad Arbor is a very unique fetchable land. Not only is it a land, but it is also a creature as well. There are some very specific rules for Dryad Arbor. Being a land, you can only play it by using your land drop(s) for the turn. You cannot cast Dryad Arbor, since it is a land. Another thing to be conscience of, since Dryad Arbor is a creature, it does have summoning sickness and therefore, it cannot tap for mana the turn it is played, unless you give it haste or whatnot. Dryad Arbor has the following text and abilities:
- 1/1 Land Creature
- It is affected by summoning sickness
- Tap to add 1 green
Final Thoughts
Having fetchable lands is a great way to achieve color fixing. Being able to search your deck for a land that produces the color(s) you need is super important for running an efficient deck, no matter the format. This article went over ever known land that is fetchable, besides basics, that has been printed in MTG. Hopefully Wizards will print the enemy Bicycle and Tango lands in the near future.
If that does happen, or when more fetchable lands MTG prints are released, they will be added to the list. With that being said, there are still quite a few options when it comes to fetchable lands in MTG. We have budget options and extremely expensive options. What are you color fixing strategies that you implement in your decks? I personally am a big fan of leaning heavily into green and also using the Triome/Tricycle fetchable lands. Sound off in the comments below and let me know! Thanks for reading and happy fetching!
